The UDL Science Notebook

Funded by the Office of Special Education Programs and the Institute of Education Sciences, this project is focused on the development, scaling and research of a Universally Designed for Learning science notebook. We are working with CAST to create a suite of collaborative tools that support elementary school students to make sense of their science experiences through discourse and writing. Our design approach is focused on improving self-determination in learning, thereby shifting students relationship to the curriculum.

“For me to hear their original thinking and for the first time see that understanding of the science concepts — I think that was a good moment. Especially the students with IEPs, it was the first time I could see what they knew about science.” – UDL Science Notebook Teacher

This project is the most recent extension of a line of work focused on researching and developing education solutions that engage youth with disabilities and educators to leverage emotion in service of science learning.
